Graeme Brewer began his career in surf lifesaving when he won consecutive Australian junior ironman championships in 1976 and 1977, competing for the Tamarama club. Brewer changed to swimming in the pool and gained notoriety at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, Canada, winning a silver medal in the 200 m freestyle. At the Moscow Olympics in 1980, he claimed a bronze medal. He came eighth in the 100m freestyle and seventh in the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay.
Brewer is best known for being a member of the Mean Machine competing at the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane. He combined with Neil Brooks, Greg Fasala and Michael Delany to win gold in the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay, gaining their nickname for shaving their heads for the race. He also won gold in the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay. He competed at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics in the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay, coming fourth.
Brewer is currently the Head Coach for Willoughby Swim Club. Willoughby has recently won the Northern Suburbs Championships point score in December 2007 and placing 12th in the NSW State Championships in January 2007 from 110 competing clubs. In his first season as St Aloysius’ College swimming Coach the team received 4th place at the CAS Championships.
