Some facts about Fencing at St Aloysius.

Fencing is a dynamic sport combining athleticism with technical skill and tactical decision making. Fencing first started at St. Aloysius’ College in the late 80’s and is classified as both a winter & summer sport. Fencers compete individually & in team events at various competitions during terms 2 & 3. In the team’s event, there are three levels of competition, the U13’s, U15’s and Senior Boys. Although boys mainly fence foils, some of the older boys also represent the school in epee’ and sabre.

The coach, Mr Jeff Gray, Maitre d Arms, has over 38 years experience in fencing, he is assisted by Mr Frank Bartolillo 2004 Athens Olympian, 9 time Australian Mens Foil Champion. Lessons occur at the school on Monday and Wednesday afternoons between 3:20 and 4:30. Monday is reserved for the novices and Wednesday for the experienced fencers. Modern safety equipment ensures this sport is safe. All equipment is provided.

Over the years St. Aloysius’ fencers have been very successful both in team & individual events. In past years several students have represented Australia and/or NSW.

  • The Andersen boys represented both NSW & Australia
  • David Donato represented NSW & Australia
  • James Zwar, Edward Mackenzie,Jeremy Amies and Hayden Fitzgerald have all represented NSW.

In 2008

  • St Aloysius were the winners of the Roberta Nutt Shield.
  • Edoardo Crepaldi Malone U11’S School State Champion
  • In teams U15’s & U13’s both came 2nd in School State Championship
  • School League team event U13’s came 2nd and 3rd.
