Some facts about Fencing at St Aloysius.
Fencing is a dynamic sport combining athleticism with technical skill and tactical decision making. Fencing first started at St. Aloysius’ College in the late 80’s under Mr Santangelo, and is classified as both a winter & summer sport. Fencers compete individually & in team events at various competitions during terms 2 & 3. In the team’s event, there are three levels of competition, the U13’s, U15’s and Senior Boys. Although boys mainly fence foils, some of the older boys also represent the school in epee’ and sabre.
The coach, Mr Jeff Gray, Maitre d Arms, has over 36 years experience in fencing. Coaching occurs at the school on Monday and Wednesday afternoons between 3:30 and 4:45. Monday is reserved for the novices and Wednesday for the experienced fencers. Modern safety equipment ensures this sport is safe. All equipment is provided.
At St. Aloysius’ we have been very successful both in team & individual events. In 2007 the U15’s are the School State Champions (2007), and two boys have represented NSW at the National Oceanic Competition. In past years several students have represented Australia at overseas competitions.
