- 2007 School Certificate Report
- 2007 HSC Report
2007 HSC Report:
The Class of 2007 have received a most pleasing set of results in the HSC. One of the easiest points of comparison in performance is the number of students in the Merit list. To be eligible for that list a student must score 90 or more in a 2-unit course, or 45 or more in a one unit course. While this is a limited comparison as it only looks at the top performing students, it is the one used by the press, as these results are made public.
| Year | 2001 | 2002 | 2003 | 2004 | 2005 | 2006 | 2007 |
| Total students | 126 | 119 | 124 | 109 | 144 | 134 | 145 |
| Distinguished Achievers | 82 | 117 | 134 | 83 | 131 | 165 | 198 |
198 mentions is an excellent result in keeping with the strong results of 2006. An outstanding result by a group of hard working students. Another pleasing aspect was the performance of the cohort as a whole. One measure of this is the numbers in the bottom bands. In 2005 there were 40 student results in the bottom 2 bands in a particular subject. In 2006 this number was reduced to 20. The number in 2007 was 11. Similarly in 2007 in 2 Unit courses two thirds of students were placed in top 2 Bands (therefore with marks of 80 or more) and 94% of Extension candidates were in top two bands (marks of 40 or more out of 50).
Thus the results across the board were strong. This has been a pleasing feature of results in recent years. This is due to a number of factors:
- The culture of valuing academic achievement for all students
- The hard work and professionalism of staff
- The better targeting of courses and levels of subjects for individual students.
All-Rounders:
There were 6 students named in the Premiers All-Rounders list. These students scored 90 or better in 10 units. They were:
R. Alessi, M. De Waal, O. Doraisamy, J. Marel, J. McElhone, A. To
Top Achievers:
English Extension 2: J. McElhone was awarded full marks for Extension 2 English
Mathematics Extension 2: Sean Gomes: 10th in state
UAI calculations:
The College does not have access to students UAI’s. However, we will use the scaling information provided by the Universities Admission centre to estimate UAI scores.
It does seem that we had as many as six students achieve a UAI above 99. Also well over 50 students have scored a UAI of 90 or more. This is more than 40% of the year 12 candidature
Further details on UAI performance will be available after more analysis.
Faculty Highlights:
English: The English faculty has worked hard to improve the results at SAC. The HSC results in 2007 were easily the best since the introduction of the New HSC. In the Advanced English course 24 students received a Band 6. This was 26% of the candidature and was almost three times the state average. Similar excellent results were achieved in Extension 1 & Extension 2 English (see table below). The improvement in English results has been phenomenal and is a testament to the hard work of the English faculty. Boys now work as hard and are well rewarded for their efforts in English as they are in the Maths & Science subjects.
Economics: The performance of this subject continues to be strong. Over 1/4 of the students achieved a Band 6. The consistently high results in this demanding subject are a credit to the faculty.
Mathematics: The results in Mathematics are once again strong. While all mathematics courses achieved pleasing results of particular note were the two extremes: General Mathematics where 21% of students achieved a Band 6 and the average result for SAC was 12% above the state average. In Extension 2 Mathematics (4 Unit) 50% of students were in the top Band and the average was 9% above the state.
Music: The efforts made by the Music department to raise the academic results in the HSC have been hugely successful. In 2007 40 % of Music 2 candidates were in Band 6 and all extension Music students were placed in the top band. It is heartening to see academic success accompanying the excellent performance work of our musicians.
PDHPE: This course has quickly built a culture of high achievement. 14 students (50% of candidature) achieved a Band 6 result. What is particularly noteworthy of results in this subject is the consistency of excellent results from students of all abilities.
Visual Arts: Anyone who attended the annual art show would be aware of the quality of Art produced by our Year 12 students. Their results in the HSC in 2007 were outstanding. 9 students (53%) were placed in band 6. The other 8 students received a band 5 result. Of particular note was that 6 students had their bodies of work retained for possible inclusion in Art Express.
History: The performance in both Ancient History and the demanding Extension History courses were particularly pleasing. One third of students in Ancient History and 31% of students in Extension History were placed in the top Band. These are outstanding results.
Chemistry: While the results in all Science subjects were strong, particular mention should be made of the results in Chemistry where 28% of students were placed in the top band. The improvement in this subject in recent years has been very welcome.
General Comments:
In my 2006 report I wrote the following
“The results in both the 2006 School certificate and Higher School certificate have been the best achieved by the college since the introduction of changes to those two credentials in 2001.
The class of 2007 has achieved results commensurate to and in some respects better than 2006. It seems the bar is being lifted higher each year. This is happening while the involvement of our students in co-curricular, service and cultural pursuits is also at a generous and demanding level. The Jesuit goal of producing men of “competence, conscience & compassion” is being actively pursued at SAC.
