- 2006 School Certificate
- 2006 HSC Report
2006 HSC Report:
The Class of 2006 have received a most pleasing set of results in the HSC. One of the easiest points of comparison in performance is the number of students in the Merit list. To be eligible for that list a student must score 90 or more in a 2-unit course, or 45 or more in a one unit course. While this is a limited comparison as it only looks at the top performing students, it is the one used by the press, as these results are made public.
| Year | 2001 | 2002 | 2003 | 2004 | 2005 | 2006 |
| Total students | 126 | 119 | 124 | 109 | 144 | 134 |
| Distinguished Achievers | 82 | 117 | 134 | 83 | 131 | 165 |
165 mentions (DA's) is easily the highest proportion of merits achieved by St Aloysius since the inception of the new HSC, being twice that achieved in 2001. An outstanding result by a group of hard working students. Another pleasing aspect was the performance of the cohort as a whole. One measure of this is the numbers in the bottom bands. In 2005 there were 40 student results in the bottom 2 bands in a particular subject. In 2006 this number was reduced to 20. While we have not yet gathered all the UAI results (school are not provided with these) indications are that the mean will be the highest we have achieved during this time.
Thus the results across the board were very strong. We had a stronger top and middle and not much of a tail
The press do publish “league tables” comparing schools. While most educationalists shudder at such simplistic tables; I should note that the “ranking” of St. Aloysius varies significantly between the two papers. The ranking in the Daily Telegraph, which has St. Aloysius higher than any CAS or GPS school (apart from Grammar), and the highest Catholic school after Loreto Kirribilli, is more reliable as it is based upon the percentage of mentions in Merit list compared to the number of exams sat at a school.
The Sydney Morning Herald’s table was wrong. In past years, as claimed in the caption this year, its table was based on the number of mentions in the merit list divided by the number of students sitting the exam from the school. As corrected the next day (but with no new table produced) this year’s table was simply based on the raw number of mentions on the merit list. In other words the bigger schools had more merits because they had more students!
All-Rounders:
There were 7 students named in the Premiers All-Rounders list. These students scored 90 or better in 10 units. They were:
G. Flint, T. Haremza, J. Johnston, D. McNeil, J. O’Donoghue, T. Park, M. Uy
Best in Subject:
Economics: T. Haremza was ranked 5th
General Mathematics: A. Boon was ranked 18th
UAI calculations:
The College does not have access to students UAI’s. However, we will use the scaling information provide by the Universities Admission centre to estimate UAI scores.
It does seem that we had at least 5 students achieve a UAI above 99, and more than forty-five over 90.
Further details on UAI performance will be available after more analysis.
Distinctive Course:
In 2006 we had our first student undertake a Distinction course, Graham Purcell. This course was undertaken through Charles Sturt University. Graham was awarded a Distinction grade for the course.
Faculty Highlights:
English: The English faculty has worked hard to improve the results at SAC. The HSC results for 2006 were the best in the new HSC as were the School Certificate results. The introduction of streamed classes; setting students in the right course (Advanced or Standard) and a complete overhaul of the teaching and assessment programmes have contributed to this success. Of course the diligence of the students cannot be underestimated.
Economics: The performance of this subject continues to improve. Nearly 1/3 of the students achieved a Band 6 compared to ¼ in 2005. The consistently high results in this demanding subject are a credit to the faculty.
Mathematics: The results in Mathematics continue to be bedrock on which a sound HSC is based at St. Aloysius. The conventional wisdom was that this group may not be as strong as the class of 2005. yet their performance in all courses was higher. The high demands of our Mathematics teachers have once again achieved excellent results. 16 % of General Mathematics; 39 % of Mathematics, 61% of the Extension 1 course and 42% of the extension 2 course achieved marks in the top band.
Studies of Religion: This subject, particularly the 2 Unit course has achieved excellent results for several years. The 1 Unit cohort also achieved excellent results with 25 % in the top band. In the 2 Unit course 40% of candidature achieved band 6, compared to 10% state-wide.
Music: The efforts made by the Music department to raise the academic results in the HSC have been hugely successful. Last year we had excellent results in Music 2. In 2006 the Music 1 and Extension course did particularly well. The experience of our Music staff in directing students to the appropriate course, along with their expertise has contributed to another year’s excellent result.
PDHPE: This is a relatively new course at St. Aloysius. Nevertheless it has achieved consistently high results. In 2006 over half the candidature achieved a Band 6 result. The course mean of 87.33 was a huge 14.52 marks above the state mean.
Visual Arts: Anyone who attended the annual art show would be aware of the quality of Art produced by our Year 12 students. Their results in the HSC were consistently strong. This is a credit to the boys and the recently retired Head of Visual Arts, Mr. Connolly.
History: The performance in both Modern and Ancient history was strong for a wide range of student ability. The performance in the demanding Extension history course, undertaken by a relatively large cohort of 15, was particularly pleasing. The history faculty continues to engage students and enable students of a wide range of ability to achieve excellent results.
General Comments:
In my 2005 report I wrote the following
Some of the changes introduced in recent years as a result of our analysis and reflections include:
- Introduced Streamed classes in English : Year 11 2005; Year 10 2006
- Reviewed advice to students about suitability for General Mathematics & Standard English.
- Tougher entry requirements into Extension courses
- Extra lesson in Extension History
- Greater emphasis on writing
- Continual review of nature of assessment tasks e.g. inclusion of mid year exam for English
- Communicated our ‘learning’s’ to parents & students
- Supervised study in Kircher Library
- Introduced Legal Studies in 2006
I believe at the close of 2006 I can confidently report that those initiatives have been successful The results in both the 2006 School certificate and Higher School certificate have been the best achieved by the college since the introduction of changes to those two credentials in 2001.
