Rector and Principal

Fr Ross Jones

Rector - Rev Fr Ross Jones SJ

The Rector of the College is Rev Fr Ross Jones SJ. Fr Jones grew up in the Jesuit parish of St Mary's North Sydney. He graduated with honours in biochemistry and began his teaching career at St Aloysius' College in 1974, taking science in the senior years. In his time at the College he coached basketball, athletics and debating, and held the rank of Major in the College Cadet Unit. During this period he completed a Master's degree in Education and a Diploma in Theology. After ten years, the last four of which as Year 11 Form Master, he left to join the Jesuit novitiate at Canisius College in Pymble.

Philosophy and theology followed for five years in Melbourne, during which time he was for one year the Junior Boarding Master at Xavier College. He was a tutor at Newman College, Melbourne. Fr Jones was ordained at the end of 1990 and celebrated his first mass in the Boys' Chapel.

The Province was then about to engage in a new school enterprise in the Parramatta Diocese and Fr Jones was appointed Foundation Principal of Loyola College in Mount Druitt, a co-educational senior high school. He was responsible for the building and development of the project and was Principal until 1997.

The Provincial of the day then appointed Fr Jones Socius to the Provincial, Assistant for Schools, and Australian Secretary to the Jesuit Education Conference of East Asia-Oceania. He has been particularly involved in the Jesuit school network throughout East Asia-Oceania. For many years, he has been a member of all the School Councils in the Province (including St Aloysius' College). Fr Jones was foundation Chair and is currently a Board Member of the Loyola Institute, which is charged with maintaining the Ignatian ethos and culture of the Society's ministries, but especially the schools. He has a passionate interest in the history of Jesuit education and the Society's particular charism and ethos as manifested in the educational apostolate. He is chaplain to the Filipino community in Sydney and Melbourne. Fr Jones completed the final phase of his Jesuit formation (Tertianship) in the Philippines in 2003-04.

Fr Jones was appointed Rector of the College (Head of School and Superior of the Jesuit Community), and commenced in 2003.

 

Fr Chris Middleton

Principal - Rev Fr Chris Middleton SJ

The Principal, Rev Fr Chris Middleton SJ, joined the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in 1976 on graduation from St Stanislaus' College, Bathurst. He completed his Novitiate at Pymble and then commenced his studies in philosophy and theology at the United Faculty of Theology in Melbourne. In 1983 he completed a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) at the University of Melbourne. Fr Middleton then spent three years' regency here at St Aloysius' College from 1984 to 1986. In 1987 he returned to Melbourne to conclude his theological studies, gaining a Masters in Theology. Fr Middleton was ordained in Orange in 1989.

From 1990 to 1991, Fr Middleton served as Chaplain at Newman College, the Jesuit residential college within the University of Melbourne, while also tutoring in History. In 1992 he commenced as Vice-Rector at St Leo's College, within the University of Queensland. In 1996 Fr Middleton undertook post-graduate studies in the United States in Educational Administration through Fordham University, completing a Masters in Science (Education). In 1997 Fr Middleton completed his tertianship, the final year of Jesuit studies.

In 1998 Fr Middleton was appointed Rector and Deputy Headmaster at Saint Ignatius' College in South Australia. He was involved in administration, teaching History, and directing the College's Campus Ministry programme.

In 2003 Fr Middleton was appointed by the Jesuit Provincial to be Principal of St Aloysius' College.
