St Aloysius' College

Governance of the College

St.Aloysius' College is a work of the Jesuit Fathers and Brothers. It is part of the world wide educational apostolate of the Society of Jesus.

The College Council

In 1992 the Superior General of the Society of Jesus directed that the governance of all schools in the Australian Province should be assisted by a council developed from within the College community and its friends. The Council is the governing body of the College. Its charter is to conduct the College as a Jesuit school, being responsible to the Provincial for the control and management of the affairs of the College. Day to day management is delegated by the Council to the Rector and Principal, who report to Council meetings.

The Council, which was incorporated and commenced operations in 1993, comprises fourteen members appointed by the Provincial for a three year term, five of whom are required to be Jesuits.

For the first seven years of its operation, Hon John Kearney, QC, retired judge of the Supreme Court was the inaugural Chair of Council. He stepped down at the end of 1999 and accepted the post of Ambassador to the College, a role which brings him into frequent contact with students and staff and allows the Council to draw on his valuable expertise as an Officer of the Council.

In the Year 2000, the Deputy Chair of Council was appointed by the Provincial of the Society of Jesus to succeed the Hon John Kearney QC. Mrs Josephine Lonergan comes to the position with considerable experience in education, not least being the Executive Director of the Australian Parents Council.

In 2006, Mr Eric Goodwin became the third Chair of Council. Mr Goodwin is a past parent of the College and served as a member of Council in its early years before work with the Lend Lease Corporation took him to projects overseas. In recent times, he has also chaired the Council's Finance Committee.

Officers of the Council include the Rector as Chief Executive Officer, the Principal, the Bursar, the Foundation Chairman and a Minute Secretary. The Council meets seven times a year.

The Council operates a number of sub-committees - Building, Finance, Chair's Forum - which meet regularly prior to each Council meeting and report to the Council.

The Council seeks to ensure that, in collaboration with the Rector and Principal, the College is conducted as an independent, Catholic, Jesuit school for boys. The Council considers and implements policies aimed at fulfilling the mission of the College which calls for a partnership with parents and families in the education of their sons and proposes Christ as the model for life, fosters excellence in teaching and learning and promotes life-long learning and spiritual growth.

The Council aims to foster the Ignatian vision with respect to all aspects of schooling and has encouraged the introduction of the Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm as a systematic method of teaching which puts into practice the principles characterising Jesuit education. Combining Ignatian spirituality and teaching methods, it makes teaching and learning a shared experience for the teacher and the student with mutual contributions and discoveries. As a corollary, the tutor system has been further developed as a pastoral aspect of encouraging the growth of the whole person.
